Coping with Trauma

Many of us experience sudden negative emotions that can be overwhelming.

In the book I’m OK, You’re OK, Thomas A. Harris, MD, shares a story about a 40-year-old woman who was suddenly overcome by sadness while walking down the street. She later discovered with the help of a therapist that she had walked past a music store playing a song her mother used to play on the piano when she was just five years old. This song triggered memories of intense grief from when her mother died 34 years earlier.

If you experience intense feelings of distress, it might be linked to a past event in your life.

You don’t have to continue suffering.

Understanding Your Brain’s Response

Your brain is constantly scanning your environment to keep you safe. When it recognizes a familiar pattern of distress, it triggers a cascade of reactions—your heart rate increases, you start sweating, and more. These reactions happen almost instantly, without conscious thought.

As in the case of the woman walking past the music store, the event your brain is reacting to may have occurred many years ago, but the reaction feels as fresh as the original event.

Connecting the Dots

I have helped many clients connect these dots. As a trained RTT® Practitioner, I use what is often called Hypnosis, but is more accurately described as “Guided Meditation.” This method requires the client to be relaxed and fully awake (with eyes closed during the session) and able to respond to my guidance. Sessions typically last up to an hour and may only require one or two sessions to resolve the underlying issues. There’s no need for months of therapy visits.
